Project Brief

This behind the scene mathematical coding project "Rune & Code"  was an in-depth exploration of basic design and code principles, focusing on how code and software can be used to create effective web-based communications. Through a series of exercises, I developed skills in User interface (UI) design, learning to apply typographic form, language-based messaging, and organizational systems to create dynamic, interactive experiences. The project integrated HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript, using “BRACKET“ text editor to build and develop websites.

During the project, I participated in group critiques and discussions, which allowed me to refine my design solutions and expand my understanding of naming conventions in UX design. The process also emphasized creating well-crafted, informed design solutions that aligned with defined communication goals. A key part of the project was choosing and studying a designer , in this case, Rune Madsen—whose work as an artist and designer provided inspiration for the project. By examining his unique approach to design, I was able to integrate his philosophies and techniques into my own work, blending creative expression with technical precision.

INSIGHTS:

When working through this “Designed and Coded” experience I noticed that researching the designer’s or studio’s history, including significant milestones, influential projects, and key achievements helps me understand their background and capture their design evolution. Analyzing their design methodology, processes and their approach to problem-solving, user experience, and interaction design gives good insight into their core design principles and philosophies, their values and beliefs about design and their approach to user interaction and interface design.

Process

The "Rune & Code" project involved a deep dive into the intersection of design and coding, showing how mathematical and software-based principles can be applied to create effective web communications. Through exercises focused on user interface (UI) design, I explored the use of typography, language-based messaging, and organizational systems to build interactive experiences. Utilizing HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript in a text editor, I developed a website that aligned with the communication goals. Group critiques and discussions enhanced my understanding of design choices and naming conventions in UX. The study of Rune Madsen’s design philosophies influenced my approach, blending creativity with technical precision, and shaping my understanding of how coding can be a tool for artistic expression.

Through my coding project, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript were key to creating effective web-based communications by applying basic design principles. For each composition that describes designer “Rune Madsen” HTML provided the structural foundation, organizing content and defining the layout. CSS brought this structure to life with visual styling, managing typography, colors, spacing, and overall aesthetics to enhance readability and appeal. JavaScript added interactivity, enabling dynamic behaviors that made the user experience more engaging and responsive. Through exercises in UI design, I explored typographic form, messaging, and organizational systems, integrating insights from critiques and Rune Madsen's design philosophy to refine solutions.
