Project Brief

Dreams and Nightmares” are two posters that illustrate their grasp of semiotic theory and ethical design principles. The project helped aimed at exploring how different methods of image-making and textual messaging can effectively communicate a specific theme or concept. “Dreams and Nightmares” poster series visually explores the contrasting experiences of success and entrapment, illustrating the journey of breaking free from the constraints of a traditional 9-5 job. Through bold design, these two posters symbolize the emotional highs of pursuing one’s dreams and the darker reality of feeling trapped in a routine life.

In contrast, the “Nightmares” poster conveys the suffocating feeling of being stuck in a 9-5 grind, symbolized through darker tones and rigid, confined typography. The design evokes a sense of restriction, as though time and space are closing in, highlighting the monotony and mental strain of working in a job that feels limiting and unfulfilling. The visual composition expresses the internal conflict of feeling trapped in a cycle, disconnected from personal dreams and passions.

The “Dreams” poster captures the essence of success, freedom, and fulfillment. It depicts an expansive, open space with vibrant colors and fluid, uplifting typography, symbolizing the limitless possibilities that come with pursuing passions beyond the constraints of a typical workday. The design radiates optimism, portraying the liberation and empowerment of building a life on one’s terms, with elements that reflect creativity, ambition, and achievement.

“Dreams and Nightmares” explore how different design choices like color, typography, and imagery affect the interpretation and reception of the message. The posters not only visually engage the audience but also convey the intended meaning clearly and accurately. Visuals and text may be perceived by different audiences and avoid any unintended biases or misrepresentations. The overall goal is to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application, demonstrating an ability to use semiotic analysis and ethical considerations to produce compelling and thought-provoking design solutions. I hope it encourages viewers to reflect on their own lives, aspirations, and the balance between security and fulfillment. Through powerful imagery and contrasting visual styles, this project invites deeper introspection into the choices we make, the dreams we chase, and the fears that may hold us back from true success.

INSIGHT: The integration of semiotics is shows how important  signs and symbols convey meaning, it allows for a deeper understanding of how visuals affect interpretation and they invite viewers to reflect how art and design resonate with their personal lives,  whether its aspirations, and fears. By drawing attention to the tension between security and fulfillment my project uses design as a tool for deeper searching, demonstrating how visuals can provoke meaningful thought and conversation.

Process

The draft versions of the "Dreams and Nightmares" posters have laid a solid foundation for the final compositions, effectively capturing the initial contrasts between success and entrapment. Through iterative refinement, the drafts have helped clarify the semiotic elements, establishing the visual language and thematic direction of each poster. This journey has deepened the exploration of how signs, symbols, and design principles can communicate complex emotions and societal issues. Overall, the drafts have guided the creative process, allowing for experimentation with semiotic layers while staying grounded in ethical design principles. The final compositions will build on these foundations, using the progress made in each draft to deliver a refined, emotionally charged, and conceptually rich visual experience.

In the "Dreams" draft, the initial vibrant color schemes and fluid typography successfully conveyed a sense of freedom and boundless possibility. Through feedback and further development, the composition has evolved to emphasize even greater expansiveness, with more dynamic visual elements and a heightened focus on imagery that symbolizes creativity and ambition. The transition from draft to final form sharpens the emotional resonance, ensuring the message of fulfillment is clear and impactful.
Similarly, the "Nightmares" draft captured the oppressive feeling of being trapped in routine through darker tones and rigid typography. As the design progressed, the composition became more visually restrictive, with refined text and imagery that intensify the sense of mental strain and monotony. The draft’s exploration of confinement has allowed the final design to magnify the symbolic weight of entrapment, tightening the layout to evoke a greater feeling of suffocation and isolation.

Towards the final composition of “ Dreams and Nightmares” many draft collages lead to critical step final compositions in the "Dreams and Nightmares" series. It serves as a bridge between concept development and the refined poster designs. Collaging allows for the exploration of different visual elements, textures, and ideas in a flexible, experimental way, helping to distill the key semiotic symbols and emotional tones that will define final compositions. A simple step we did while making collages is "Animating Collages.” The focus shifts to polishing the designs and bringing the posters to life through dynamic motion and physical form. The animation phase serves as an exciting opportunity to deepen the conceptual impact of the "Dreams and Nightmares" series by adding motion that complements the static imagery. This process enhances the narrative—elevating the symbolism of freedom, success, and entrapment—by incorporating subtle movements that mirror the emotional highs and lows depicted in the posters.

CHOOSING LANGUAGE

To generate language that best expresses the two sides of my concept, it's essential to explore a wide range of textual forms, from idioms and internal monologues to lyrics and historical writing. Drawing from different sources, like poems, news articles, quotes, or song lyrics, provides rich material that can be paired in unique ways, creating new resonances when combined. Incorporating idiomatic expressions or dialogue between two characters can add depth, while puns and personification inject playfulness or emotional weight. Synonyms, antonyms, and keywords help emphasize contrast, while pulling language from advertising, music lyrics, quotes, or spoken word poetry can infuse the concept with a sense of immediacy or cultural relevance.

HAND MADE COLLAGES  + DIGITAL COLLAGES

Once the animation process is completed, the final step marks the transition from digital experimentation to a physical, tangible outcome. The designs will be meticulously prepared for printing, ensuring that the colors, typography, and composition retain their full visual impact in print form. This phase involves perfecting the alignment, quality, and integrity of each design to make sure that both posters communicate their themes as powerfully in print as they do on screen. Together, these steps of animation and printing bring the "Dreams and Nightmares" series to its final, polished form, combining both digital and physical elements to create a multi-layered visual experience.

PHOTOSHOP DIGITAL COLLAGES EXPLORATION

In my digital collage exploration using Photoshop, I created new collages, applying various tools and techniques demonstrated in class. Using the Object Selection Tool, I quickly isolated subjects from images and incorporated them into my compositions. The Layer Mask allowed me to seamlessly blend elements by painting areas in or out, while inverting masks helped refine the look. I experimented with Layer Style - Blending Options, trying effects like Multiply, Screen, and Overlay to achieve dynamic interactions between layers. I adjusted the Layer Opacity for subtle transparency effects, and used Layer Duplicate to easily repeat and manipulate objects within the collages.

DIGITAL COLLAGES USING CODE, GENERATORS AND AI

In my exploration of creating collages using online code-based generators, I focused on experimenting with the various typographic tools available on spacetypegenerator.com. By selecting different generators such as CYLINDER, FIELD, STRIPES, and COIL, I adjusted variables like size, spacing, and angles to manipulate text in creative ways. I captured screen grabs of the results, experimenting with different combinations and effects. These images became the foundation for my collages, where I layered, blended, and cropped the typographic elements using design software. This process allowed me to explore the relationship between type, form, and texture, resulting in dynamic and abstract compositions.

The process of many experimental collaging elements was crucial to the development of the "Dreams and Nightmares" project, enabling a deep exploration of many ways of designing with technology with my contrasting themes. By layering and juxtaposing elements like typography, imagery, and textures, I could experiment with how to best communicate the emotional highs of success and the darker feelings of entrapment. Collaging allowed for flexibility in design, helping me  refine the visual narrative for each poster while ensuring clarity and coherence. It also facilitated the integration of ethical design principles, ensuring the message was impactful without being overwhelming. This iterative process helped bring the posters to life, capturing both the visual and conceptual essence of many project's themes limiting down to my concept.
